Lab
Build your own tiny AI.
Two small AIs you can build in a minute. They learn from whatever you give them, right here on your device, so you can see exactly how it works.
01
Teach it to sort
Give it a few examples of two kinds of message. It counts which words turn up in which pile, and uses that to guess where a new message belongs. Spam filters started out exactly like this.
- Name your two piles.
- Add or change the examples.
- Type a new message and see where it goes.
It thinks: Kind
Try breaking it. Add "thanks" to the Unkind pile four times and watch "thanks, that really helped" flip to Unkind. It only knows what you showed it, which is where bias comes from.
02
Teach it to talk
Chatbots write one word at a time. Each time, they pick a likely next word based on everything they've read. This one has only read the text in the box. Change the text and it learns something else.
- Paste or write any text, the longer the better.
- Press Next word to watch each choice, or Write to let it run.
- Slide towards Wild for more surprising picks.
A big chatbot works the same way, but it has read a huge share of the internet and looks back over thousands of words, not just the last two. That's why it sounds clever. It's still picking the next word.
